Steven Les Ding was born and raised in Christchurch, the son of a prominent medical specialist and nurse. He was educated in Christchurch and after some years spent in Dunedin returned to the Christchurch School of Medicine in 1988, graduating with the medical qualification MBChB in 1990.

He worked as a junior doctor at Christchurch, Princess Margaret, Burwood and Ashburton hospitals with exposure to a wide spectrum of specialties including surgery, emergency medicine, spinal injuries, neurology, cardiology and nephrology before embarking on specialist training in Gastroenterology. This training was undertaken in Christchurch, Adelaide (Repatriation General Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre) and Sydney (Westmead Hospital) and completed in 2000, when he attained the specialist qualification FRACP.

Extra specialist experience was gained by working in the South Australian Liver Transplant Unit and as Advanced Therapeutic and Interventional Endoscopy Fellow in Sydney. He was then Staff Specialist at Westmead Hospital, visiting specialist to Camden Hospital and Westmead Childrens and consulted in private practice at Westmead and Pennant Hills in Northern Sydney.

He returned to Christchurch in late 2002 as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Christchurch Hospital, Clinical Senior Lecturer to the Christchurch School of Medicine (University of Otago at Christchurch) and Co-Director of Christchurch Gastroenterology Group (formerly co-located with Gloucester Specialists, prior to 22/2/11 earthquake).

In his role at Christchurch Hospital he sees outpatients, performs endoscopy, cares for inpatients and teaches medical students and junior doctors. He had contributed for many years to the outpatient service and provided comprehensive endoscopy services to the Paediatric Department until recently.

Steven is married to Linda and has 3 sons
